CARL PERKINS ACT
The Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act
of 1998 provides funding for secondary and post-secondary career and technical
education programs. The Act of 1998 provides funding for program years July 1,
1999 to June 30, 2004. The re-authorized Act has a number of changes. Perhaps
the most significant change in the re-authorized Perkins Act is the emphasis
placed on academic standards. Where the 1990 Act focused solely on the
integration of academic and vocation proficiencies, the 1998 Act identifies
development of rigorous academic standards and accountability measures
for:
• academic attainment • technical skills
attainment • placement in employment and/or post-secondary education •
percentage of students enrolled in and completing CTE programs leading to
non-traditional careers
Support services are available to students in
career and technical programs depending on the individual district. Possible
services include: CTE Special Populations Coordinator, tutors, supplemental
assessment, paraprofessionals, teach aides, special instructional material,
notetakers and/or interpreters, placement and/or transition services, and lab
fees/supplies.
